Additional questions:

- Are you attempting to 'End Process' from Windows Task Manager (Game.exe) between attempts to run the game? You should, to make sure it's not locked up in the background. (Pro-tip: CTRL-SHIFT-ESC should open Windows Task Manager in all modern versions of Windows.)
- Can you run the game with/without the CD?
- Can you run the game in windowed/fullscreen mode?
- Are you attempting to run the game with command line parameters? (eg. -nosound)
- Where is your Immersion install folder? (..\Diablo II\Immersion ?)
- Are you running any other software (besides bundled PlugY) that interacts with D2?

Advanced:

- Is your Diablo II install folder correct in the Windows registry? (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Blizzard Entertainment\Diablo II\InstallPath AND HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Diablo II\InstallPath)

After the first launch failure I DID check the Task Manager (I've had funky acting programs before, so I've learned to do that)

As stated, launch failure on all attempts (cd/no-cd windowed/non-windowed) with a caveat. On checking my log I noticed some additional processes attempted with one launch attempt, I'll check to see which one that was in a moment.

Can't replicate it though, pretty sure this was when I attempted no-cd windowed

No command line parameters.

Immersion folder is in the standard file path (C:\Program Files\Diablo II\Immersion)

No other software active.

Ran regedit, everything looks right.

- Were your saved games backed up at launch? eg. Does ..\Immersion\Save\* include any files with the .backup extension?

Having played for a while with 1.05 1.04 without any problems via d2se, I thought an upgrade was in order as I like the necro, but having upgraded to 1.05 1.05 it will no longer load, it just tries to load the realm as the above problem

Windowed mode should be OpenGL rather than Direct3D, which it looks like you're attempting to run. Use Immersion's launcher to start the game, and try windowed vs. fullscreen.
